the masters – round 1

The Masters got underway today, and Augusta National was playing quite tough.  Only 18 players were under par, and Vijay Singh had the lead at -5.  And besides his resurgence, my predictions from earlier are all shot to hell.  Tiger Woods had an up and down day for an even par 72.  Phil Mickelson is at -2 and was improving as the round moved on.  Sergio Garcia was even, and Mr. Doubtfire (Colin Montgomerie) was tied with my man John Daly at +2.

David Duval got roughed up for a +12, ahead of only Charles Coody who shot an 89.  Coody was the winner of the 1971 Masters, when he beat Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller by a couple shots.  Gary Player, who at 70 years old is the last of the Big 3 (Palmer, Nicklaus) to play in the Masters, shot a 79.  But the winner of nine majors did record the first birdie on the newly lengthened first hole.

Tomorrow ought to be interesting, and it'll probably screw up the efficiency of certain workplaces as masters.org has streaming video of Amen Corner all day.  All day.
